Natalie Portman’s controversial Oscar gown just sold for a very pretty penny — and it had nothing to do with who wore it last.
While we loved the idea of red and black polka dots on the red carpet, we put Portman’s vintage Dior couture dress on our worst dressed list, mainly because of the ill-fitting bust. Vogue, on the other hand, gave it best dressed.
At the time, Portman’s stylist Kate Young said they chose the dress precisely because of its fit, which seems absurd. (See the second slide in our gallery below.)
“Natalie’s dress is amazing. It’s an actual 1954 spring couture dress, from Rare Vintage on 57th street in New York. We borrowed it—it’s $50,000!—she was actually going to wear another dress but then I got a call from the woman at Rare Vintage and she was like, ‘You should see this dress for Natalie.’ So we went and she put it on, and it needed zero alterations, and Natalie was like, ‘This was meant to be, wasn’t it?’ And I said, ‘I guess it was.’
That said, Young was right about one thing. The dress was just purchased by an “unknown British couture collector” for $50,000.
Worst dressed or no, would you pay $50,000 for a piece of fashion history?
